More than 60 Members of Parliament from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have thrown their weight behind former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as he is widely expected to contest the party's presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.   The MPs, representing various constituencies across the country, were spotted at Dr Bawumia's office on Thursday afternoon in what insiders described as a private meeting to affirm their support for his anticipated bid.Although Dr Bawumia has not officially declared his intention, Thursday's gathering signals growing momentum around his expected candidacy, following the NPP's recent announcement that its next presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026.

According to sources close to the meeting, the lawmakers urged Dr Bawumia to formally announce his intention to contest. "We believe he remains the best hope for our party's future, and we are ready to stand firmly behind him," one MP, who was present at the meeting, said on condition of anonymity.

One of the first to openly declare his ambitions is the Bosomtwe MP and former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who on Wednesday, June 18, took to Facebook to make his intentions known. "With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party," he wrote.
