Supreme Court nominee, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, has cautioned judges who also serve as traditional leaders to exercise discretion and avoid making politically charged statements.
Speaking during her vetting by Parliament's Appointments Committee on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, she stressed the need for judges holding dual roles to conduct themselves with restraint. "As a judge and a chief, you ought to be measured in your commentary on politics, especially in support of one party or another.
I believe a judge should be careful and measured in their language," she said.
Justice Amaleboba explained that the judiciary permits judges to assume chieftaincy roles only with the consent of the Judicial Council, in order to safeguard the impartiality of both the judiciary and the traditional institution.
