President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to transform the road infrastructure of Ghana's North East Region, promising residents that by the end of his next term in office, the area will boast some of the best roads in the country.
Speaking to a crowd in Nalerigu on Friday, June 13, 2025, during his working visit to the region, Mahama emphasized the critical role of road networks in national development and pledged immediate action under his renewed leadership. "Ladies and gentlemen, development is movement and connectivity," Mahama said. "Roads are the veins that carry economic life across our country." He acknowledged the long-standing neglect of the North East Region, despite its strategic location and agricultural potential, saying his administration would end that marginalization. "In the northeast region, despite its strategic location and agricultural potential, it has long suffered from poor road connectivity.
This is going to be a thing of the past," he declared. "By the time I leave office in four years, the northeast region would have some of the best roads in the country." Mahama explained that infrastructure is at the heart of the 2025 budget, and under what he calls "The Big Push" programme, his government has earmarked GH¢20 billion solely for infrastructure development. "One of our first priorities is the completion of the Mishio Bridge in the West Mamprusi Municipality," he announced. "Indeed, we have put the Mishio Bridge on the Big Push." He further assured residents and contractors that funding delays would not derail the initiative. "The Finance Minister has said that all contractors who are executing projects under the Big Push-anytime they present certificates for payment-within two weeks, they'll be paid their money so that the projects don't stall."
