The government has disclosed that over 500 individuals have been arrested in the last five months as part of renewed efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Beyond the arrests, a large-scale land reclamation programme targeting 10,000 hectares of degraded land is being rolled out.

Officials say the intensified campaign aims to tackle the severe environmental destruction caused by years of unregulated mining across the country.

But despite the high number of arrests, the low prosecution rate continues to raise concerns about the effectiveness of the anti-galamsey drive.
