The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has appealed to Ghanaians to support the government's decision to introduce a GHC1 levy on petroleum products, describing it as a necessary sacrifice to save the country's struggling energy sector.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 7, 2025, the MP acknowledged the financial burden the new levy may place on citizens but emphasized its importance to Ghana's long-term development. "My appeal to Ghanaians is that we understand the challenges, and we understand that you are now trying to navigate your way out of the prolonged economic hardship that you were confronted with under the eight years of the NPP," he said.

His comments come in the wake of Parliament's passage of the amendment to the Energy Sector Levy Bill, 2025, which introduces a GHC1 increase in the levy on petroleum products.

The move is expected to generate an estimated GHC5.7 billion annually to help reduce debts in the energy sector and ensure a more stable power supply.
