The Furniture and Wood Products Association of Ghana (FAWAG) has expressed strong support for former President John Dramani Mahama's plan to ban the use of wooden furniture in schools, describing it as a timely and environmentally conscious initiative.

President Mahama announced the policy during the national celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, pledging to issue a directive that would halt the use of wooden furniture in schools.

He cited the contradiction of tree-planting efforts alongside rampant deforestation caused by furniture production. "To reduce deforestation, I will issue a directive to stop the use of wood for producing school furniture.

Going forward, we will adopt environmentally friendly alternatives such as recycled plastic or metal," Mahama stated.
