The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has strongly criticised the -led government over the newly-amended Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA), otherwise termed as D-levy.
In a post on his X account on June 6, 2025, he called out the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, and the Minister of Finance, , asking them to tell the President Mahama that the decision to introduce a new fuel levy was a poor move.
Ahiagbah argued that taxing Ghanaians to offset the long-standing inefficiencies, mismanagement, power theft, and corruption within the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) does not constitute a "difficult decision," but rather an "incredibly weak and convenient choice." He asserted that a truly difficult decision would entail directly confronting and resolving the root causes of ECG's systemic problems.
Ahiagbah, indicated that the government's move to impose a levy of GHc1 per liter of fuel to address ECG's collection deficits falls short.
