President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to establish the Ahafo Region's first public university, promising a major boost to tertiary education and job-focused training in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences.

Speaking on Saturday, May 31, during a stop in Goaso as part of his nationwide "Thank You" tour, the president said the new institution will align education with the region's economic strengths while easing access for students in underserved areas. "This university will offer quality education in agriculture, natural resources, and health sciences," Mahama told an enthusiastic crowd. "It is part of our broader goal to expand access to tertiary education and build capacity in regions that need it most." The proposed university forms a central piece of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government's education policy, aimed at decentralizing academic opportunities and preparing graduates for industries that drive regional economies.

Mahama further announced plans to upgrade nursing and midwifery training institutions in the region into degree-awarding colleges.

He also pledged that the distribution of buses to senior high schools and health training institutions would continue, to support teaching and learning across the country.
