Minority Members of Parliament staged a walkout from Parliament on Thursday in protest of the continued detention of the New Patriotic Party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The MPs say their action is in solidarity with Wontumi, who remains in custody despite being granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO following investigations into his alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as "galamsey." Authorities say the arrest is based on suspected acts that have contributed to significant financial loss to the state.

These include mining without a valid licence, destruction of forest reserves, and contamination of water bodies in parts of the Ashanti Region.
