Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has expressed deep concern over the current limitations in managing student discipline and academic performance within the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy framework.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday May 22, Carbonu highlighted a significant issue where headmasters are unable to let go underperforming students, stating, "Now no headmaster can repeat a student. "You can come to school, you will not even attend classes, but you will be promoted from form one to form two and form three." He emphasised that this policy undermines the educational standards and discipline in schools.
The NAGRAT President pointed out that the rationale behind this policy is to ensure that students benefit from government sponsorship only once.
However, he argued that this approach leads to the promotion of students who exhibit disruptive behaviour and lack academic commitment.
