The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has called for the immediate prosecution of Akonta Mining Ltd, citing the company's alleged involvement in illegal mining activities that have caused significant environmental damage.
In a statement released on Sunday, May 18, 2025, the coalition expressed disappointment over the government's failure to enforce laws against Akonta Mining Ltd, despite documented evidence of the company's unlawful operations.
The coalition highlighted the pollution of water bodies, such as the Tano River, and the destruction of forest reserves, including the Tano Nmiri Forest Reserve, as major concerns. "The well-documented illegal activities of Akonta Mining Ltd, since 2022, remain not only outstanding without action but are seemingly ignored," the statement read.
The coalition pointed to a documentary produced by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which detailed Akonta Mining's illicit activities and the extent of the environmental devastation caused.
