President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government is set to lay before Parliament a Scholarships Authority Bill, which aims at reforming the administration of government scholarships to ensure greater transparency, fairness, and accountability.
This comes amid longstanding public concerns about inequities and political interference in the current scholarship system.
In a special broadcast to the nation on his 120-Day Social Contract, he disclosed that Cabinet has granted policy approval for the bill, which is expected to be laid before Parliament when it resumes sitting.
According to him, the proposed legislation will establish the Ghana Scholarships Authority, a body that will be mandated to implement a more transparent and merit-based scholarship system that prioritises needy and deserving students "To ensure fairness and transparency and eliminate political patronage and corruption in awarding government scholarships, we promised to lay before Parliament a new bill to streamline administration and prohibit political appointees from accessing government scholarships. "Cabinet has given policy approval for the new scholarships authority bill to be laid before parliament to fulfil this promise.
