The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused President John Mahama of undermining Ghana's democracy through the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on the matter on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday May 5, Ahiagbah warned that the judiciary's independence is at risk, arguing that excessive executive control could erode fundamental rights protected under Article 21 of the Constitution. "What he is doing now is aiming at our democracy, and I believe that when the judiciary is completely invalidated and subject to the executive, your rights, your claims to Article 21 protections will be completely undermined," he stated.
He further cautioned that a judiciary controlled by political forces would fail to uphold justice, instead prioritising service to those in power. "You have a judiciary that doesn't care much because their preoccupation is not justice but service to the political powers of the day, and I think that that is a travesty," he added.
Ahiagbah's remarks come amid growing concerns over judicial independence and governance in Ghana.
