Passport officials in Ghana have been given a strict 15-day deadline to deliver the country's new chip-embedded passports or face sanctions, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, April 27, 2025, Ablakwa outlined a series of sweeping reforms aimed at modernising Ghana's passport issuance system.

At the heart of these reforms is the rollout of chip-embedded passports that meet International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The new passports will feature embedded chips that store biometric data, making them more secure, harder to forge, and easier to verify electronically.
