The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ellembelle in the Western Region, Joseph Agyekum, has pledged to provide alternative livelihoods to communities affected by illegal mining (galamsey) in the district.
Galamsey became widespread in the Ellembelle District in 2018, destroying many farmlands and water bodies due to its harmful effects.
Prior to the 2024 general elections, many Chinese nationals set up camp at Sendu in the Ellembelle District to engage in galamsey, supported by local community members.
Currently, galamsey activities have ceased in the Ellembelle District, and those Chinese nationals have fled following increased security measures.
