The Government of Ghana and Goldfields Ghana Limited have officially struck a deal on a transitional plan for the Damang Mine, paving the way for a 12-month mining lease to keep operations going while long-term plans are finalised.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the Presidency confirmed that the lease will be granted to Abosso Goldfields Limited - a Goldfields subsidiary - and is subject to parliamentary approval in May.

Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, assured the public that this transition is not just a formality, but a strategic step forward. "Goldfields will resume open-pit mining during the transition period while safeguarding jobs and conducting feasibility studies to establish Damang's reserves and mine life," he said.

He further noted that processing of existing stockpiles will continue under a joint management team made up of representatives from both the government and Goldfields. "Both parties are committed to working in good faith to ensure a successful transition and eventual transfer of a viable mine to Ghanaian ownership," Kwakye Ofosu added.
