A vendor believed to have sold contaminated asana (a local corn drink) to pupils has been arrested and is currently assisting with investigations following a suspected case of food poisoning at two basic schools in Prampram.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 14, saw over 20 pupils from Prampram D/A Basic 'B' and Methodist Freeman Basic School collapsing during class hours.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of distress, with several children seen running and collapsing across the school compound.
Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, in a statement shared on Facebook, confirmed the incident and the arrest of the vendor. "The vendor of the suspected 'contaminated' asana is assisting with the ongoing medical investigation. "Samples have been sent to the lab to determine what exactly went wrong," he stated.According to the MP, 22 children were affected. "A total of 22 children were affected and treated with 21 discharged for further observation and 1 child admitted overnight as a precautionary measure," he revealed, following consultations with the Education Directorate and the Medical Director for the Prampram Polyclinic.
