Minister of Communications, Digital, Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has raised serious concerns about what he describes as the reckless and excessive allocation of radio frequencies in Ghana.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, April 14, Sam George said Ghana's current media landscape is saturated, with over 600 frequency authorizations - a situation he believes is damaging to the sector's growth. "I think we've abused the assignment of frequency authorization.

A country like Ghana should not have in excess of 600 frequency authorization - it's inimical to the growth of your business," he said.

The Minister, known for his strong reform stance, suggested that if given the mandate, he would significantly reduce the number of authorized radio stations to fewer than 100 - but added that such a move would likely be misinterpreted. "If you leave me I will rationalize this and you will have less than a hundred radio stations, but the next thing you hear is Sam George is shutting radio stations," he noted.
