Ghana spends nearly $400 million annually on chicken imports, a situation President John Dramani Mahama describes as a national embarrassment.

Speaking at the launch of the government's flagship Feed Ghana Programme in Techiman in the Bono East Region, President Mahama announced plans to support 54 individuals to produce four million birds-equivalent to 10,000 metric tons of chicken.

The President emphasised the government's renewed focus on livestock development to enhance the production of cattle, goats, and sheep, alongside improved access to high-quality breeds.

He said the livestock production component of the programme would target agro-production enclaves and the development of key infrastructure.
