James Gyakye Quayson, Member of Parliament for Assin North, has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court, bringing an end to a long-standing legal battle over his dual citizenship status.
The ruling, delivered on April 9, 2025, concluded proceedings that stemmed from allegations that Quayson held Canadian citizenship at the time he filed to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections-a move the prosecution argued contravened Ghana's Constitution.
Quayson consistently denied the charges, maintaining that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship prior to submitting his nomination forms.
Speaking after the verdict, he expressed relief, describing the ruling as a vindication of his stance throughout the case.
