Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, has clarified comments made by the Interior Minister regarding the deportation of foreign nationals arrested for engaging in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
His clarification follows criticism from individuals such as Dr.
Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey, who described the government's deportation approach as unlawful and a violation of Ghana's legal framework-particularly the 2019 amendment to Act 995.
Speaking on Channel One TV's Face to Face show on Tuesday, April 8, Kwakye Ofosu explained that the Interior Minister's comments were meant to highlight the need for a case-by-case approach to dealing with foreign nationals involved in galamsey. "Based on my interaction with the Interior Minister, I think that the point that he was trying to make is that we need to make a case-by-case study of the situation.
