Illegal miners, known as galamseyers, have been labeled "dangerous terrorists" by Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah for their role in Ghana's worsening environmental crisis.
Addressing the media in Accra on Thursday, April 3, the Minister expressed grave concern over the devastating impact of galamsey activities on the nation's water resources.
He pointed to alarming pollution levels, with turbidity readings soaring between 5,000 and 12,000-far above the safe threshold of 500. "We are essentially drinking poison," he warned, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action.
The Minister condemned the actions of illegal miners, accusing them of prioritising personal profit over the well-being of millions of Ghanaians. "We can't allow a few people to make money at the expense of millions of Ghanaians and kill us," he declared, urging the public to view galamseyers as a serious threat to the nation's health and environment.
