In the heat of the 2024 campaign, candidate John Dramani Mahama assured Ghanaians that he would grant amnesty to galamsey convicts.
The thinking behind this decision is that he felt the people who have been convicted of illegal mining weren't the real kingpins.
Rather, they were just persons who were being used by the then DCEs, Ministers and other government officials he believed were beneficiaries of the illegal mining activities in the country.
The president indicated that the convicted ones are victims of circumstances and that they need to be reformed so that they do not engage in galamsey. "I will grant amnesty to people convicted of Galamsey because those who are imprisoned for galamsey are not the actual perpetrators of galamsey.
