Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko has criticised the previous administration's decision to centralise property rate collection, arguing that it weakened revenue generation for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Speaking at the Oxfam Tax Dialogue on Channel One TV on Tuesday, March 18, Ampem Nyarko noted that when property rate collection was decentralised, many MMDAs were able to generate substantial revenue.
However, the introduction of a centralised system under the former government significantly reduced efficiency and revenue inflows to local authorities.
The Asuogyaman MP described property rates as an untapped revenue source that could greatly support local development if properly managed.
