The Minority in Parliament has critiqued the NDC government's GHS291 billion appropriation for 2025, pointing out inconsistencies in their fiscal policies.
They highlighted that during the 2024 election year, the NPP government's expenditure was GHS250 billion, despite the additional costs associated with funding a free and fair election.
Former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, addressing journalists in Accra on Thursday, stated, "When you compare our expenditures in 2024 when we had an election, usually with elections the government spends so much because they have to give the EC everything they will need to conduct a free and fair election." She continued, "So when you look at the appropriation for 2024 clearly with an election that was fully funded by government alone the appropriation was GHS250 billion." Asare expressed concerns over the NDC's claims of cutting waste and rationalising expenditure, noting that the current appropriation of GHS291 billion contradicts these assertions.
She emphasized that the budget numbers do not align with the government's stated goals of reducing waste and rationalising spending. "Here we are the NDC telling us that they want to cut waste, reduce rationalised expenditure and reduce the waste in the system, they are giving us an expenditure of the GHS291 billion, no election.
