In order to address the challenges posed by violence after elections, Ghana will need to establish a National Peace Commission to replace the National Peace Council, the United Nations Peace Ambassador, Bishop Sam Owusu has recommended.
He explained that the National Peace Commission will have more powers and resources to promote peace and prevent violence.
He also called for the establishment of a National Election Security Operations to develop a systematic blueprint for the sustainability of security challenges before, during and after the general elections and train key stakeholders. "National Peace Commission Ladies and gentlemen, I believe the time has come for us to upgrade the existing National Peace Council to the status of a commission or authority. "This elevation will grant it more powers and resources to promote peace and prevent violence. "As part of the commission's mandate, they will need to establish National Peace Awareness Centers.
These centres among other things will embark on peace initiatives that are community-led," he said in a presentation he made at a forum on Wednesday, March 5.
