Ghanaian farmer, actor and politician John Setor Dumelo has said the path to financial freedom for many Ghanaians is blocked due to our 'wicked' rent system, which takes two years advance payment before getting a property.
According to Dumelo, who is the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture as well as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in the Greater Accra Region, a system of monthly rent payments or, at most, 6 months advance, will free so many Ghanaians from the clutches of debt.
Per the laws of Ghana, it is illegal to demand more than six months' rent from someone before renting them your property but as is common in Ghana, the lawyer is more of a suggestion and not followed by anyone.
The convention is two years' payment and sometimes, one year.
