Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extended formal congratulations to Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) coalition following their victory in Germany's 2025 Federal elections.
In a letter dated February 25 addressed to Hon.
Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the CDU/CSU, NPP's Director for External Affairs, Kwame Kyeretwie-Amponsah (known as Stonash), praised the German center-right parties for their "decisive victory," describing it as "a testament to the enduring appeal of pragmatic, responsible governance and the German people's trust." The message highlighted the ideological alignment between the two parties as fellow members of the International Democratic Union (IDU), noting their shared commitment to "economic prosperity, the rule of law, and conservative values within a modern context." The NPP also drew parallels between CDU/CSU's political journey and their own, expressing that the German coalition's comeback from their 2021 electoral defeat offers "a light of hope and a sense of reassurance" for the NPP, which recently lost its own general elections in Ghana. "We particularly admire how your campaign effectively balanced addressing contemporary challenges while staying true to your foundational principles," Kyeretwie-Amponsah wrote in the official correspondence.
The letter concluded with an expression of interest in strengthening bilateral relations between the political parties and exploring future collaboration opportunities as Merz and his party prepare to form a new government.
