The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), has urged President John Dramani Mahama to address the pressing challenges faced by nurses and midwives.
In a press release dated February 28, 2025, the union expressed disappointment that the President's State of the Nation Address failed to highlight the struggles of healthcare workers, despite his commitment to national development. "While we recognize the government's commitment to national development and a plan to fix the economy, we are deeply concerned that the address failed to highlight the struggles of nurses and midwives, who are the backbone of Ghana's healthcare system," the statement read.
The union highlighted issues such as salary delays, poor working conditions, inadequate resources, and stalled promotions, warning that the continued neglect of these concerns could lead to a mass exodus of healthcare professionals. "The mass exodus of healthcare professionals is not just a threat; it is an unfolding reality that, if unattended, will cripple Ghana's healthcare system," they cautioned.
UPNMG called for urgent action, including timely salary payments, better working conditions, and the provision of essential hospital resources to ensure quality patient care.
