Richard Gyan-Mensah, the Deputy Minister-Designate for Energy and Green Transition, has defended the proposed partial privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), emphasizing that it is necessary to address inefficiencies and ensure a stable power supply.
Appearing before Parliament's Appointments Committee on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Gyan-Mensah stressed that the move is in the best interest of both Ghana and the ECG.
He acknowledged concerns raised by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and other stakeholders but maintained that the government's approach aims to enhance the company's operations. "The privatisation of the ECG is something that has become very necessary.
We all can attest to the fact that some current issues are ongoing with respect to ECG. "ECG currently needs capital injection, there are a lot of inefficiencies in the system, and I believe that bringing on board the private sector will play a very key role in resolving some of these challenges.
