Minister-Designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, has defended his proposed plan to conduct a new comprehensive SIM re-registration exercise across the country when he assumes office.
According to him the exercise together with the establishment of a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) is necessary to tackle the rising cases of fraud and cybercrime in the country.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Ningo Prampram MP emphasised the need for stricter measures to curb fraudulent activities, particularly those involving mobile phones.
He argued that while SIM card blocking is a common practice, fraudsters often bypass this by simply transferring the blocked SIM to another device. "One of the key things we need to do, which I stated emphatically, is a proper sim re-registration.
