Renowned environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has disclosed that he was forced to leave Ghana ahead of the 2024 elections due to threats he received over his investigative reports on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
The Multimedia Group journalist recounted how his security concerns led him to seek refuge outside the country for a period. "It's been difficult for me for some time, and at some point before the elections, after assessing my security, I had to go out of the country for a while," he stated.
Illegal mining has remained one of Ghana's most pressing environmental crises, with its devastating effects on water bodies, farmlands, and local communities.
Journalists exposing the activities of powerful individuals involved in galamsey often face threats, intimidation, and in extreme cases, physical harm.
