A study by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed that one in every ten adolescent girls aged 10-19 years had engaged in sexual intercourse before the age of 15 as of 2022.

Extracted from the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS), the study indicated that 10.2 per cent of the adolescent population-who make up 22 per cent of Ghana's total population-experienced early sexual activity.

Although this figure reflects a slight decline from 12 per cent in 1993 to 10.2 per cent in 2022, the two per cent improvement over nearly three decades was described as negligible, given the various education programmes aimed at curbing early sexual activities among girls.

Alarming Statistics on Adolescent Pregnancy and STIs Statistics presented by the Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, in Accra last Thursday, highlighted troubling trends.
