A violent confrontation between small-scale miners and military personnel stationed at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities.
The clash, which took place Saturday night in the Ashanti Region town of Obuasi, also saw four vehicles set ablaze, further escalating tensions in the area.
One of the burnt vehicles overturned, causing the fire to spread to nearby containers, which were also consumed by the flames.
Swift intervention by residents prevented the fire from spreading further to other containers The cause of the altercation remains unclear, but the incident has left the community on edge as investigations continue.
