ActionAid Ghana has celebrated Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the first female to occupy such an enviable position. "This achievement marks a defining moment in the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and we extend our strongest commendations upon her assumption of this pivotal role," it said in a press release on Thursday, January 9. "As a gender-focused organisation, AAG is proud to acknowledge this milestone, which boldly represents progress for women's representation across Ghana. "This victory exemplifies our relentless pursuit of feminist-leadership principles and gender equality in society." Vice President Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in on Tuesday, January 7 to officially start work in her new role.

Before then she delivered a victory speech on December 9 after the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) declared the results. "We refer to your victory speech where you eloquently reiterated that 'I'll hold the door open for others to walk through', a powerful affirmation of your willingness to work and support the feminist action cause." ActionAid Ghana added that Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang's leadership "will not only inspire but also empower women and girls, significantly enhancing their confidence to participate in governance to improve their dignity and advocate for quality of life". "We are optimistic that you will prioritise the rights of Ghanaians especially that of women and girls in government policies and programmes.

Achieving these high principles of democracy will add value to Ghana's democratic credentials and promote social justice for all." The civil society organization also congratulated all the female members of Parliament (MPs) election in the December 7 elections. "Our sincere congratulations also go to the gallant female Parliamentary candidates who stood for the elections but couldn't win. "We commend Ghanaians for their belief in and better appreciation of what women in leadership can do for the overall development of the country."
