Former President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted the urgent need to address inefficiencies within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as part of broader efforts to stabilize and improve the country's power sector.
Speaking during a meeting with a World Bank delegation at his private office in Accra on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mahama suggested revisiting the privatization of ECG's operations to inject private sector efficiency into the distribution of electricity. "If we don't fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain," Mahama stated. "Going ahead with privatising the last point of electricity distribution, bringing in private sector efficiency, is something that we want to take up again. "We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that." The former president, known for his hands-on approach to governance, emphasized that privatization could be a key step in resolving long-standing challenges that have plagued the company, including operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery. "It's not just about privatization for its own sake," Mahama clarified. "This forms part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the performance of our energy sector." Mahama's comments reflect a renewed focus on energy reform, an issue that has been a persistent challenge for successive governments in Ghana.
