The outgoing Member of Parliament for Suame, , has declared the recent appointment of party leadership by the (NPP) Council as illegal.

In an exclusive interview with on January 5, 2025, the former Majority Leader expressed his concerns, stating, "The National Council does not have the constitutional authority to appoint party leadership." Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasised that such decisions should be made through caucus consultation, as mandated by the party's constitution.

He argued that the leadership of the party should be determined by Members of Parliament themselves, reflecting the importance of maintaining institutional memory and ensuring democratic processes. "Leadership should be a collective decision of the MPs rather than being imposed by a council.

The caucus members must have the opportunity to select their leaders, ensuring continuity and reducing the chances of internal disputes," he told .
