Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to use his upcoming one-term presidency as a springboard for constitutional reforms that could transform Ghana's governance and development trajectory.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on December 28, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu characterized Mahama's position as a rare opportunity to lead without the constraints of personal political ambitions, a luxury not afforded to most leaders. "Because he doesn't have any stake going forward, nobody would accuse him of manipulating the system to satisfy himself," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of Mahama focusing on national interests. "He has a very unique opportunity to take us where we want to get to, to improve our governance and ensure this Constitution becomes development-oriented." Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu suggested that a constitutional review process could begin by the second quarter of 2025, allowing time for Mahama's administration to stabilize and set the groundwork. "Maybe April, May, or June would be a better time to start the constitutional review process.
The first three months-January, February, and March-will be difficult terrain," he added, stressing the need for careful preparation and inclusive consultations.
Meanwhile, former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has said that his prayer in these few days has been to get the spirit of discernment in choosing the people he will want to work with.
