The Minority in Parliament has warned that Ghana faces the risk of a cholera epidemic before the incoming administration takes office if the Akufo-Addo government does not take immediate and decisive action to curb the outbreak.

The caucus reported that as of December 17, 2024, 123 cases and 15 deaths had been recorded in the Western Region, with 15 health workers infected while treating patients.

Speaking to journalists, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, criticized the government's negligence, stating that the same dereliction of duty that led to the NPP's electoral defeat must not be allowed to exacerbate this public health crisis. "Without immediate and decisive interventions, Ghana risks facing a full-blown cholera epidemic before the incoming administration takes over from the outgoing NPP regime. "It is deeply concerning that what could have been a minor cholera outbreak has instead exposed the fragility of our healthcare system.

This outbreak which should have been controlled weeks ago continues to escalate due to systemic neglect and inefficiency. "The minority urges the government to act swiftly and decisively to address these challenges by ensuring resources are adequately allocated and health workers provided with the support they need to contain the outbreak," he stated.
