The Ministry of Information has announced that as part of new measures to fight the illegal mining menace, government will intensify 'Operation Halt' which is led by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
This measure is being rolled out in collaboration with small-scale miners as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as "galamsey." This initiative is aimed at promoting responsible mining practices to curb galamsey, which has caused significant environmental damage across the country.
In a press statement issued by the Information Ministry on Wednesday, October 9, it emphasised the importance of involving small-scale miners in the battle against illegal mining.
According to the statement, partnering with miners who operate legally will help identify and expose illegal operators, enabling more efficient enforcement of laws and regulations in affected areas.
