Ghana is preparing for a nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, as the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of TUC-Ghana directs its members to stay off work in protest.

The strike is in response to the government's perceived inaction on the issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

GAWU's decision to participate in the strike was finalized after a meeting with President Akufo-Addo on October 3, 2024, failed to produce any meaningful resolution.

The President's inability to persuade Organised Labour to reconsider their strike action has prompted more unions, including GAWU, to join the cause.
