Job Description

The TV Station Manager is responsible for the overall leadership and smooth day-to-day operation of a television station. The role ensures that station operations run efficiently, content standards are maintained, technical systems are reliable, and the station meets business, audience, and regulatory objectives. The manager oversees staff, budgets, programming direction, and compliance requirements while driving continuous improvement in both broadcast and digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership

  • Manage station operations and ensure effective workflows across departments (newsroom, production, engineering, sales, and administration).
  • Oversee daily scheduling, coverage plans, and broadcast readiness.

Programming & Editorial Oversight

  • Support programming strategy and ensure content aligns with station goals and audience needs.
  • Ensure compliance with copyright/licensing standards and internal editorial policies.

People Management

  • Recruit, train, coach, and evaluate staff.
  • Assign duties, manage performance, and promote a positive and productive work environment.
  • Budgeting & Financial Management
  • Develop and monitor the station budget.
  • Control costs, approve expenditures, and ensure financial targets are met.

Technical & Engineering Coordination

  • Ensure broadcast equipment, transmission systems, and production tools are maintained and operating correctly (in collaboration with engineering teams).
  • Approve major upgrades and ensure reliability and uptime goals are achieved.

Compliance, Safety & Legal Requirements

  • Ensure adherence to broadcasting regulations, advertising standards, labor laws, and company policies.
  • Maintain safety procedures for staff and talent during production.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure high standards for on-air quality, audio/video performance, presentation, and accuracy.
  • Address on-air errors, viewer complaints, and continuous improvement needs.

Revenue Support & Partnerships (where applicable)

  • Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to support advertising revenue, sponsorships, and partnerships.

Crisis Management

  • Lead response during emergencies such as technical outages, breaking news changes, weather disruptions, or staffing shortages.

Reporting & Performance Tracking

  • Review performance metrics (ratings, digital reach, ad performance, operational efficiency, and compliance reports).
  • Provide regular updates to station owners/executives/board members.

Requirements

Required Skills or Experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting, Communications, Business Administration, Media Studies, or a related field(or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in broadcast operations, television management, or station leadership.
  • Strong understanding of broadcasting processes, production workflows, and technical basics.
  • Knowledge of broadcast regulations and compliance standards (or ability to quickly learn and apply them).

Work Conditions

  • Work is typically full-time and may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • The role may require standing or moving during station tours, studio visits, or during production activities.
  • On-air deadlines and breaking news events can create high-pressure work environments.

 Reporting Line

  • The TV Station Manager usually reports to Station Ownership/Executive Director/General Manager/Network Leadership (as applicable).
