Modern Ghana – Democracy to the World Stage

By GhanaSummary Newsroom

Peaceful elections, oil, Afrobeats and the Year of Return — Ghana’s global moment.

Since 1993 Ghana has done what few in the region managed: vote, argue furiously, and hand over power peacefully — repeatedly. The NPP and NDC have alternated through Kufuor, Mills, Mahama and Akufo-Addo, with Mahama returning to the presidency after the December 2024 election. For investors and diplomats, Ghana became shorthand for doing democracy in West Africa.

The economy transformed alongside. Oil found at the Jubilee field in 2007 flowed from 2010, joining gold and cocoa as economic pillars, while Accra’s skyline and tech scene grew. Then came 2019’s Year of Return — marking 400 years since the first enslaved Africans landed in Virginia — which brought hundreds of thousands of diaspora visitors, global celebrities and investment under the “Beyond the Return” banner.

Culture carried the flag highest. From E.T. Mensah’s highlife through Osibisa to Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and Black Sherif topping global charts, Ghanaian music conquered the world; the Black Stars lit up World Cups in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022 — the 2010 quarter-final run remaining the stuff of legend. As Ghana heads toward 70 years of independence in March 2027, the “Black Star” story is still being written.
