Make Kumasi, Mampong campuses of UEW autonomous - UTAG

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) of the Kumasi campus of the University of Education, Winneba have called on government to speed up processes in making the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of UEW a full-fledged autonomous University.

According to the UTAG members, the move will enhance the training of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers for Ghana and Africa.

The Association said it was ready to continuously support and make the vision of the Government to improve Technical and Vocational Education in Ghana.

A statement signed by the UTAG –COLTEK chairman, Yarhands Dissou Arthur indicated that the process to grant autonomy to the two campuses has taken too long.

The statement said the Association was grateful to the government for the steps taken so far to upgrade the two campuses.

“UTAG-COLTEK wishes to state that we are very much prepared to support and make this vision of government a reality”, the statement added

The Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh on August 31, 2018, Education announced that Government intends to make the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of the University of Education, Winneba together with eight other technical and vocational oriented Colleges of Education autonomous.

In keeping faith with the government’s commitment to quality TVET,  the President through the Minister of Finance made provision for the yet to be created University in the 2019 budget statement.

The Association emphasized the need for the government to expedite the processes to complement its vision for quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana.
