Her experience reflects a significant shift taking place in some of Baringo's hard-to-reach communities: women who once stayed away from formal antenatal care because of distance are now making their way to health facilities after specialised pregnancy monitoring services were brought closer to them.

For decades, traditional birth attendants have remained an important source of maternal care in some of Baringo's remote communities, because they are physically closer to women than formal health facilities.
