The cjn, the barrister and our obsession with titles

Through a memorandum signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi on July 13th 2026, the CJN ordered all legal practitioners to stop using the title “Barrister” as a prefix to their names in official engagements.

The reason given was simple: the use of “Barrister” as a prefix is “inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

If Justice Kekere-Ekun can tackle both the prefix and the problems behind it, then that will be a legacy worthy of the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria.
