Mr Shahbal questioned why the President, who is also a businessman, would ask him to choose between business and political leadership.

The businessman-turned-politician also alleged that the President had been influenced by people seeking to push him out of the race, accusing political actors of using party structures and zoning to determine who should contest elective positions.

Mr Shahbal also announced his exit from ODM, saying he has concluded that the party will not give him its ticket and insisting that he will contest the Mombasa governorship regardless of its backing.
