Within an hour of leaving the room, I received a five-page letter informing me of the Council’s resolution to dismiss me – not only as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Nairobi but also as an employee of the institution.

The letter directed me to clear from the university by preparing a comprehensive handing-over report and to surrender university property to the Acting Vice-Chancellor by the end of business on Monday, September 30, 2024.

Discussions with the Chair of Council, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, the Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a meeting with President William Ruto – who expressed concern about “so much noise” at the university – reinforced my decision to stay put.
