Forty-four years after the attempted coup that shook Kenya and nearly toppled President Daniel arap Moi’s government, former Kenya Air Force (KAF) personnel who were arrested, tortured and jailed in its aftermath are still fighting for justice.
Former KAF Commander Peter Mwagiru Kariuki told a court martial that he had received information about the alleged plan and passed it to the then Chief of General Staff, General Jackson Mulinge, on July 14, 1982, about two weeks before the coup.
In one of the latest developments, High Court judge John Chigiti issued an order for the arrest of Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru and directed that he be brought to court to explain why the government had failed to compensate the former soldiers.
