Kericho Annex Prison under scrutiny over death of remand prisoner

Brenda Chemutai, 19, who allegedly committed suicide inside the Kericho Annex Prison where she was awaiting trial for an offence of being in possession of bhang that was seized in a vehicle allegedly belonging to a senior police officer.

The family, however, insists that investigators determine when she was found, who discovered her, when the incident was reported to police, who authorised her body’s removal, and why her relatives were not notified immediately.

Kericho East Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officer, Kennedy Apindi, said police have launched investigations following reports from prison officials that the incident was a suicide.
